A Complex Pergola Solution
Cat Netting Mount Lawley
This case study covers cat netting Mount Lawley. Expert cat netting in was the top priority for a homeowner preparing to welcome two magnificent Maine Coons into her Mount Lawley home. Anyone who has shared their home with this gentle giant breed knows they are not only large but also incredibly intelligent and playful. Their curious nature and impressive climbing skills mean that any outdoor space needs to be exceptionally secure. The client wanted to provide a stimulating environment where their future companions could safely explore the sights and sounds of the garden, without any risk of wandering.
The goal was to transform an existing pergola and garden area into a seamless, escape-resistant oasis. However, this particular backyard, nestled in the leafy streets of Mount Lawley, presented a unique set of challenges that required careful planning and a bespoke approach. It was a project that perfectly illustrates how no two backyards are the same, and why a custom solution is often the key to success. We were excited to take on the challenge and create the perfect, safe outdoor space.
The Challenge: A Complex Mount Lawley Garden – cat netting Mount Lawley
We always do a thorough analysis and site plan before we even get to a property and it was clear this wasn’t going to be a straightforward installation. The space was a wonderful, established garden, but it featured a mix of different boundary types, an existing pergola structure, and one very significant complication. Our first task is always to walk the perimeter and assess every potential escape route, thinking like a cat – especially a clever and athletic one.
The most significant hurdle was the presence of an old asbestos fence along one boundary. Safety for both our team and the client’s family is our number one priority, so drilling inton rubbing anything against or attaching anything directly to this material was completely out of the question. This required a creative approach to build a secure barrier without disturbing the existing fence in any way. This is a common issue in some of Perth’s more established suburbs, and it’s one we have extensive experience in navigating safely.
Moreover, the garden had other complexities. A beautiful, mature lime tree stood near the boundary, its branches offering a potential snag for netting to find. A different boundary fence, made of wood, contained a gate into the property. Finally, the pergola itself, while providing a great framework, had angles and gaps that a curious cat could potentially exploit. The project demanded a multi-faceted solution rather than a single, simple application of netting.
Our Custom Cat Netting Solution
To create the ultimate safe and secure pergola cat enclosure, our team designed a plan that addressed each challenge individually. This is where experience and craftsmanship really come into play, combining different techniques to form one cohesive and impenetrable space. Our approach for this cat netting Mount Lawley installation was broken down into several key parts.
First and foremost, we had to tackle the asbestos fence. To do this, we designed a solution that created an entirely independent barrier. We installed vertical walls of our low-visibility 19mm cat netting directly onto the sturdy legs of the patio. This effectively created a new, safe wall in front of the hazardous one, ensuring complete security without any risk. This method required precision and careful handling, but the result was a robust and safe boundary that left the asbestos untouched.
Furthermore, the rest of the yard required a tailored approach. For the section of wall that was not asbestos, we were able to attach the netting from an aluminium fence cap directly to the fascia of the house. This creates a very clean, almost invisible line that blends beautifully with the home’s architecture. On the leaning wooden boundary fence, we installed our own fence extensions to raise the height and create a solid anchor point before running the net. This combination of techniques allowed us to create a continuous, secure perimeter that adapted to the different surfaces around the property.
Finally, a custom-netted gate was essential for the homeowner to easily access the garden without compromising security. We built sturdy attachment points seamlessly into the enclosure, allowing us to marry the netting seamlessly to the gate so that when the gate is closed, the netting installation is closed. our client had carefully pruned the lime tree, ensuring no branches provided a potential bridge over the netting or a surface for it to rub against and wear over time.
It’s these small but crucial details that transform a standard enclosure into a truly escape-resilient space, providing peace of mind and satisfying our clients needs. For other examples, see our Enclosures in Koondoola and in Banksia Grove.
Preparing for Maine Coons: Why Robust Design Matters
This entire project was driven by the future arrival of two Maine Coon cats. This breed is known for its impressive size, considerable strength, and high intelligence. A flimsy or poorly designed enclosure simply wouldn’t be sufficient for these clever climbers. Therefore, every decision we made was with these future feline residents in mind.
The use of high-quality, 19mm low-visibility netting is our standard, as it’s incredibly strong while not obstructing the view of the garden. The black colour helps it disappear, allowing the cats and their humans to enjoy the scenery. For a breed like a Maine Coon, the integrity of the fixings is just as important as the net itself. The combination of fence extensions and secure attachments to the patio and fascia ensures the entire structure can withstand the antics of large, playful cats.
By eliminating all climbing aids, like the overhanging lime tree branches, we removed the temptation and opportunity for escape. The vertical netting walls and fence extensions provide a barrier that is not only high but also uncomfrortable to climb, as cats hate the indignity of climbing upside down. The homeowner can now look forward to their new arrivals, confident that their outdoor space – just a short stroll from the Inglewood Hotel – is a fortress of fun, not a potential escape route. We can just imagine the two of them sunning themselves in the afternoon, watching the world go by in complete safety.
